ENDOMETRIOSIS, X-RAY
Endometriosis. X-ray of a woman's abdomen showing swollen Fallopian tubes (white, upper centre to upper right, and upper left) due to endometriosis. In this condition, detached parts of the endometrium (inner lining) of the uterus escape into the abdomen and adhere to other organs. The resulting cysts (several seen here, small white lumps at centre left and upper right) bleed at the time of menstruation, often causing great pain. Treatment is usually with drugs, but surgical removal of the cysts or affected organs may also be necessary. A contrast medium has highlighted the position of the Fallopian tubes on this X-ray. The uterus (lower centre) is also seen. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/CNRI/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
