The TV studio of El Progreso..Juan Bendeck (62) is from Betlehem, Palestine.'My mum came in 1965 to Honduras, I was studying in Betlehem at that time. In 1967 at the start of the six day war Israeli soldiers entered Betlehem at midnight, it was dramatic and scary. My mother told me to leave and come to Honduras, I came with an aunt. My father stayed in Betlehem. It was a long way via Tel Aviv, Amsterdam, Curacao, Panama, El Salvador and Guatemala. .It was hard in the beginning: the language, no friends and very few family members. In 1995 I went for the first time back to Palestine, in 2005 for the last time. I stayed only three days, Betlehem felt like a big prison. I left realizing that I love my country, but that I won't go back..I am successful in Honduras, I have been a minister, the head of the tourism council, I am the consul for Marocco and now I have my own TV station called El Progresso. Its dedicated to my wife who died because of dengue. All money we make, I run it with my four daughters, goes to social project. We emily 93 people, but I don't need the money...It was as early as the late 1800's that the first Palestinians arrived in Honduras. It was the time of the Ottoman empire and many Christian Palestinians felt the pressure that they had to convert to Islam and enlist in the Turkish army. Many took the boat with destination ‘the Americas' and honduras turned out to be the final destination. When the state of Israel was created in 1948 many followed. With many more in 1967 (six day war, occupation of Gaza, Westbank and the Golan heights) and during and after the two Intifadah's..Nowadays its estimated that there are around 200,000 people of Palestinian decent in Honduras, making it probably the biggest Palestinian community in the Western hemisphere. They have been very successful on both an economic and a political level. Almost all are Christians and from the Bethlehem area. (KEYSTONE/NOOR/Kadir van Lohuizen)
