German author Christa Wolf shows the Prize for foreign literature of the Book Fair in Bordeaux (Prix ecureuil de litterature etrangere 1997) in Sanssouci Castle in Potsdam, Germany, September 29, 1997. It was the first time the prize was awarded to a German author. Christa Wolf, a German literary critic, novelist, and essayist, is one of the most controversial and yet one of the most celebrated authors to come from the former East Germany. Her breakthrough as a writer came in 1963 with the publishing of "Divided Heaven" ("Der geteilte Himmel"). Some of her more noteworthy accomplishments include "The Quest for Christa T".
