NORWEGEN ABSTURZ
Part of the wreckage of a Russian Tupolev 154 passenger plane lays where it crashed earlier Thursday August 29, 1996, killing about 140 people believed to be aboard, near Opera Mountain, 10 Km (6 miles) from it's destination at Spitsbergen, an island in Svalbard archipelago, about 400 miles north of Norway. This is the latest in a series of deadly accidents that have plagued Russian airlines in recent years, and is said to be the worst air disaster on Norwegian soil. The Russian plane was carrying coalminers to work at the remote desolate arctic island. (KEYSTONE/AP photo/ Sysselmannen Svalbard)
