Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on 23 March 2020 that postponement of the Tokyo Olympic Games may become an option if the games cannot be held in complete form due to the COVID-19 and coronavirus pandemic. On 22 March, the International Olympic Committee discussed other scenarios including a possible postponement after an emergency meeting. Earlier in the month of March, Prime Minister Abe expressed a desire to hold the Tokyo Olympics as scheduled despite the current coronavirus pandemic, during an emergency video conference with other G-7 leaders.
