Louis Renault (1877-1944)
Louis Renault, deceased on 24 October 1944, was a French engineer and, together with his brothers Marcel and Fernand, founder of the car manufacturer Renault near Paris. Renault was considered the inventor of the direct drive and the cardan shaft. In 1905 the factory was awarded the exclusive contract to build the Parisian taxis; in 1906 production of trucks, buses and agricultural machinery began; from 1908 aircraft engines also followed. Louis Renault headed the group for almost half a century. When German troops occupied Paris in 1940, Louis Renault was obliged to cooperate with Nazi Germany. After the liberation of France in 1944, however, he was arrested and sentenced to death as a collaborator. Due to his poor physical condition, the full sentence was suspended. Louis Renault died on 24 October 1944 in Paris. The exact circumstances of death remained unclear and led to numerous speculations. (luk)
