Safita, Syria. Massive Donjon is of a crusader castle - Castel Blanc - of which the remainder survives in traces only. The fortress dates back to the 12th c AD. The Donjon - 28 m high, 31 x 18 m square - was rebuilt 1902 after a severe earthquake. (KEYSTONE/Georg Gerster)
