SWALLOWTAIL BUTTERFLY WING SCALES, LIGHT MICROGRAPH
Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio ulysses) wing scales, light micrograph. Swallowtail butterflies are also known as the blue mountain butterflies. They are native to Indonesia and Australia, inhabiting the rain forests. They have a wingspan of up to 10 centimetres. The relatively large scales have fine longitudinal and transverse striations. Tropical moths often have not only pigmentation of the scales, but also physical coloration caused by interference between the ridges of the scales.
