He made major contributions to most areas of chemistry, starting with new insights into the nature of chemical bonds. In the 1930s he worked on X-ray studies of the shapes and structures of amino acids and peptides. Much of this work was key to the discovery of the structure of DNA by Watson and Crick. Pauling won the 1954 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work on chemical bonds and molecular structure. He also won the 1962 Peace Prize for his campaigns against nuclear arms testing and arsenals.
