ERDE SANDSTURM
[S 7132] Dust storm spreading out over the Red Sea. This view is looking south, looking toward the mainland of Africa in southern Sudan. Aplume of dust is seen traversing the Red Sea, carried by a westerly wind funnelling through a gap in the coastal mountains. The wind responsible for this storm is a localised feature that runs opposite to the prevailing tropical easterly winds of the region. The small piece of land seen at bottom left is part of the Saudi Arabian coast. This photograph was taken from Shuttle Columbia during Mission STS-50 of 25 June to 9 July 1992.
