East German author Christa Wolf sits in front of microphones on January 26, 1978. Christa Wolf was born in Landsberg, Germany, on March 18, 1929. After her studies in German literature she became a research assistant at the Deutsche Schriftstellerverband (wirter's association in East Germany) in 1953 and worked as a reader and editor for various East German publishers until 1962. Wolf has been working since 1962 as a freelance writer and novelist. Her breakthrough as a writer came when her novel "Divided Heaven" was published in 1963. She is considered to be one of the most controversial and yet one of the most celebrated authors to come from the former East Germany. She is often referred to as the "first lady" of contemporary German literature for her development of new and experimental writing styles.
