Kim Jong-il (born February 16, 1941; died December 17, 2011, Pyongyang, North Korea) was a North Korean communist politician and, after the death of his father Kim Il-sung, the Stalinist dictator of North Korea from 1994 to 2011 as general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (PdAK), chairman of the National Defense Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army (KPA).
