MACROPHOTOGRAPH OF THE PROBOSCIS OF A BUTTERFLY
Macrophotogaph of the proboscis of a pale clouded yellow butterfly, Colias hyalae, which belongs to the order known as Lepidoptera. The long proboscis is used by this insect to suck the nectar out of flowers. At rest the proboscis is rolled into a spiral between the labial palps. It is unfolded by means of muscular action together with an increased blood pressure. The pale clouded yellow butterfly is well diffused in central Europe where it is also known as the 'golden eight' because of the figure-8 marking on the underside of the hindwing.
