THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION: PIANOFORTE BY MESSRS. ALLISON, OF WARDOUR-STREET, 1862. CREATOR: UNKNOWN.
The International Exhibition: pianoforte by Messrs. Allison, of Wardour-street, 1862. '...a very beautiful...tall cottage or semi-cabinet piano, elaborately carved in unpolished oak. The design - the style of which is partly Elizabethan, though of the time of Charles I. - is emblematical and illustrative of Music. The keyboard is supported by figures of angels kneeling, playing upon the harp. The sides...are panelled, and contain busts of the most celebrated musicians mentioned in Scripture...and medallion portraits of the great composers...The upper part of the front is supported on each side by figures of angels with harps, surmounting figures holding scrolls of music, containing the first notes of the "Gloria in Excelsis." The centre is divided into three panels by carved semi-detached pillars, supporting circular arches...The panels of the front are all richly carved. In the centre one is the figure of St. Cecilia playing upon a hand-organ; and in the side panels are angels...with the inscription, "Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax." In the spandrils of the two side compartments are carved in full relief the principal English birds of song...The cornice is perforated as much for lightness as to allow the escape of the sound'. THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION: ARMOURY, OR PORTE-FUSILS, BY JULES FOSSEY, IN THE FRENCH COURT, 1862. CREATOR: UNKNOWN.
The International Exhibition: armoury, or porte-fusils, by Jules Fossey, in the French Court, 1862. '...a beautiful work in carved walnut-wood...The base...consists of two cupboards, with glazed doors, for holding hunting and military weapons and accoutrements. In the centre is a trophy of arms composed of shield, helmet, gauntlets, swords, &c...flanked on one side by a hunter, on the other by a warrior - both in sculptured wood. Each cupboard is surmounted by an allegorical figure and two trophies...representing on one side attributes of the chase, on the other those of war. Two smaller cupboards, closing with doors inlaid with marble, form the base; and the whole is crowned by a pediment, consisting of an eagle with extended wings hovering over a pile of the equipments of war...The work is spirited in its setting out, and is well proportioned in its parts; and in details it is very rich, for the ornamental features are treated with an amount of tenderness and skill which is very pleasing...The excellence of the works manufactured by the firm of Jules Fossey, of Paris, is thoroughly known, and is confirmed by every article which it shows in the present exhibition. In the year 1855 M. Fossey was made Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862. THE GREAT INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION: LIBRARY CHIMNEYPIECE BY TROLLOPE AND SONS, 1862. CREATOR: UNKNOWN.
The Great International Exhibition: library chimneypiece by Trollope and Sons, 1862. 'The lower portion is formed of Portland stone elegantly carved, and inlaid with marble and granite, and at each side occur two marble columns...In the centre the stonework rises into a pediment, in which occurs a clock, by Dent, with an arabesque border, which is remarkable, as the whole work is of an early Italian character, being in the style known as the Lombardo-Venetian. Rising from the stonework, and resting upon it, is an enriched chimney-breast, wrought in woods of various colours, and set out into panels...The smaller elongated panels are filled with ornaments carved with great feeling and spirited in design; and these alternate with square panels which contain heads of the poets Homer, Virgil, Dante, and Petrarch, Socrates and Demosthenes, and the head of Apollo in glory as a centre; and at each side of the clock is a recumbent figure, one representing Day and the other Night. The woods employed in the upper portion of the work are chiefly dark and light oak and ebony, and these are so combined with each other and united with the other materials as to form a structure worthy to grace the library of any nobleman in the land'. THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION - CARVED IVORY CABINET, BY H. FOURDINOIS, 1862. CREATOR: UNKNOWN.
The International Exhibition - carved ivory [sic] cabinet, by H. Fourdinois, 1862. Piece of furniture made of ebony, '...richly carved in the Renaissance style, the lower portion being divided into three sections by four columns of a somewhat Corinthian character. The central portion is panelled, and has carved upon it in low relief...the Abduction of Proserpine; and this is surrounded by four comer panels, in which are represented Painting, Sculpture, Science, and Literature. The upper portion...has a pair of doors, one of which has Apollo as Morning, and the other Diana as Evening...Immediately above these is a small panel containing Venus rising from the sea; and...statuettes, supported on pedestals of lapis lazuli sustained by griffins...[there are figures] representing Peace and Plenty. The side portions...open...and disclose a series of small cabinet drawers, which are richly engraved with delicate ornament wrought with great feeling...this cabinet is highly to be commended. That it is constructed of wood is apparent, and no attempt is made at imitating in this material what can only be justly done with stone. There is also a total absence of small, jutting-out parts likely to be broken off or injured by the use of the article'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862. THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION: CONCERT GRAND PIANOFORTE, BY KIRKMAN AND SON, IN THE INDIAN..., 1862. CREATOR: HARVEY ORRIN SMITH.
The International Exhibition: concert grand pianoforte, by Joseph Kirkman and Son, in the Indian Department, 1862. '...a 7-octave concert grand...The designs and working drawing of this instrument were sent from England...and the carving was executed at Madras, East Indies, by the native workmen...the whole work was executed in the most correct and perfect manner, without any error or mistake of any kind. The case of the instrument is of solid East Indian rosewood; the carving is all grounded out, not laid on, and, considering this, it is done with surprising truth and accuracy...the skill with which the ornament is adapted to the top of the instrument, so as almost to conceal its irregular shape, reflects great credit on the designer. The carving is executed with great spirit and freedom, and the work is altogether a most interesting specimen of Indian skilled labour, showing, as it does, how well the natives can work from a European design. We may mention that the top of this pianoforte, though over five feet wide, is made of one solid piece of rosewood without a joint. Even in India it is extremely rare to meet with rosewood of such large dimensions...Besides the beauty of the case, the instrument itself is a remarkably fine-toned one'. THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION: WHITE MARBLE MANTELPIECE AND BAS-RELIEF EXECUTED..., 1862. CREATOR: UNKNOWN.
The International Exhibition: white marble mantelpiece and bas-relief executed by the late J. Thomas, 1862. 'This chaste and elegant mantelpiece was executed in pure white marble by the late Mr. John Thomas...The figures on the spandrils and centre represent Oberon and Titania, from "A Midsummer Night's Dream", attended by Puck and one of the little elfs bearing a bullrush, Puck with the ass's head. The figures are tastefully drawn and executed. Above the jambs are two small heads, one on each side, exquisitely moulded, almost emblematical of Peace and War, for one holds a bunch of wheat, whilst the other is apparently in a great passion. The latter was modelled from the artist's own son, who died in infancy. The stove, which was also designed by Mr. Thomas, is a lovely piece of work in bright steel and encaustic tiles. This portion is from the works of Messrs. Stewart and Smith of Sheffield...The bas-relief hanging above the centre of the mantelpiece does not belong to the work, but is a pleasing idea, nicely carried out, of Little Red Riding Hood, accompanied by the wolf. The stove and mantelpiece were executed for Mr. Charles Lucas, one of the contractors for the Great Exhibition building'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862. INTERIOR OF THE DOM, LÜBECK, BY SAMUEL READ, IN THE EXHIBITION OF THE SOCIETY OF..., 1862. CREATOR: MASON JACKSON.
Interior of the Dom, Lübeck, by Samuel Read, in the exhibition of the Society of Painters in Water Colours, 1862. Engraving of a painting. 'Among other interesting foreign church interiors by this gentleman exhibited at Pall-mall the "Interior of the Dom, or the Cathedral, of Lübeck" has the recommendation to many, even old, Continental travellers of unfamiliarity. Lübeck is, nevertheless, one of the most picturesque old towns in Germany, and deserves more attention than is usually given to it by travellers. The brick-built Dom still witnesses to the former importance of the Imperial free city, its side chapels containing the monuments of many of the patrician families of Lübeck, and the choir tombs of numerous Bishops and Canons. The portraits of two of the old burgesses hang on the flanking walls in our Engraving. The rood-loft between these is very interesting, with its elaborately-carved crucifix, kneeling effigies of the patron and patroness, and numerous other images, of various size, of saints, and canonised sinners too, probably, some of them. The screen of the choir is considered one of the best existing specimens of wood-carving of the Early German school, about the time of Lucas Cranach'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862. PETER PAUL RUBENS, BY J. GILBERT, IN THE EXHIBITION OF THE SOCIETY OF PAINTERS IN WATER..., 1862. CREATOR: W THOMAS.
Peter Paul Rubens, by J. Gilbert, in the Exhibition of the Society of Painters in Water Colours, 1862. Engraving of a painting. 'The representation of the great masters in their studios has been a favourite subject with modern and especially foreign, artists. Mr. Gilbert may naturally take this means of showing his admiration and reverence for the great Flemish master...The attitude of Rubens, stepping back to see the effect of his work, is not merely characteristic of all artists, but is especially appropriate when assumed as the habit of this painter; for no master depended more upon distance for the effect of his paintings, many of which, like the ceiling at Whitehall, were of colossal size, and only intended to be seen at a long distance...Modern artists employ a cane or stick, termed a "maulstick," to steady the arm, but we may mention that Mr. Gilbert is historically correct in representing Rubens without such an aid...All the accessories of this picture have a gorgeous and voluptuous character well suited to the subject. A florid and boldly-carved column, similar to that in the picture, is introduced in several of the painter's works...The little skin bags contain colours, and the pigments were so prepared up till a recent date'.
