Ichikawa of the Matsubaya, 1790-1800. The oiran, or high-ranking yuejo ‘woman of pleasure’ Ichikawa, who worked in the Matsuba house in the Edomachi Itchome district of the Yoshiwara. She is pictured here in the loose, flowing garments and informal front - tyingobi (sash), fashionable with yuejo of the time. She holds a brass pipe in her right hand and sits with a lacquer box of smoking utensils. The koi (carp) leaping upwards through a waterfall on her gorgeous uchikake (over-kimono) was associated with perseverance, and with love. The first quality is suggested in Ichikawa’s tired, poignant pose and expression, reflecting her resignation to the harsh indenture of the quarters. Self-portrait in a cap and scarf with the face dark: bust, 1633. To some extent this work reflects Rembrandt's status, showing him wearing a cap and scarf, facing one way but looking in the other. It is a fine example of Rembrandt's interest in chiaroscuro etching - with detailed passages coupled with extreme bare space. Areas like the left shoulder, cheek bone and right pupil demonstrate areas of bare 'highlight' etching. These sections are in brilliant contrast to the diligently detailed areas of Rembrandt's hair, lower torso and face. Thus his self-portraits were a means for Rembrandt to explore his experimental technique, indulge his curious nature and reveal his personality. Menasseh ben Israel, 1636. Manoel Dias Soeiro (1604-57), better known by his Hebrew name Menasseh/ Manasseh ben Israel also, Menasheh ben Yossef ben Yisrael, was a Portuguese rabbi, kabbalist, writer, diplomat, printer and publisher, and founder of the first Hebrew printing press (named Emeth Meerets Titsma`h) in Amsterdam in 1626. In 1655, Menasseh came to England from Amsterdam to (successfully) petition the Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell, to readmit Jews to the country. Menasseh had moved to Amsterdam as a child; the city was an important centre of Jewish life and culture at the time, and Jewish sitters are common in Rembrandt's oeuvre. Menasseh ben Israel, 1636. Rembrandt wears a fanciful 16th-century style plumed beret tilted at a jaunty angle and a fur-trimmed overcoat, while Saskia wears an old-fashioned veil. In addition to serving as one of many self-portraits, this small etching can also be regarded as an example of a marriage portrait. The young woman shown seated at the table with Rembrandt is his wife, Saskia van Uylenburgh, then in her early twenties. They had married two years before this etching, and remained together for eight years until Saskia's untimely death at the age of 30. Jan Lutma, goldsmith, 1656. Although Jan Lutma (c. 1584-1669) was already an elderly man when he was portrayed, he was probably still working as a silversmith. Yet despite the presence of a hammer and a pot containing punches, he is not working here but posing. He holds one of his creations - an object with a turned stem, possibly a candlestick - in his right hand, and beside him on the table is a chased silver drinking bowl. Lutma was born in Emden in East Friesland. After spending five years in Paris, he settled in Amsterdam in 1621, where he built up a reputation as a master silversmith and received a series of official commissions. As he grew older he began to experience problems with his eyes. Yet in 1656 he declared that he had been cured of his blindness. Demolition of St. James' Hall, exterior, 1907. Located on a site between Regent Street and Piccadilly, St James' Hall was a celebrated London concert hall where handsome performances were held for almost half a century between 1858 and 1905. The demolition of the hall occurred in 1905. The artist captures the cavernous rib cage of the structure lying stark and bare, the vaults of the building bleaching in dramatic sunlight. Workmen swarm around the remains of the hall, their ropes and pulleys delicately hanging off the structure, while horses and carriages pass the demolition through the street in the foreground. A.L. Smith, Master of Balliol, 1915. Arthur Lionel Smith was Master of Balliol College, Oxford, from 1916-24. He had a lifelong association with Balliol, coming up as an undergraduate in 1869. He began teaching history there in 1879 and in the same year became one of Oxford's first married Fellows after the regulations were changed. He contributed significantly to University life, in particular working to make Oxford open to all. In the late 19th century she was very active in the women's suffrage movement. Subsequently Dodd and Dacre worked closely together, first in Manchester, then in London, between 1897 and 1911, when Dodd married.
