Rates of reaction experiment. This experiment allows variables such as the concentration of a reactant to be investigated. Sodium thiosulphate (Na2S2O3, left) is a clear liquid, which reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl, upper centre) to form an opaque solution (right). [S 9127] Spacewalk. First American space walk. Astronaut Edward H. White II floating in space during the Gemini IV space mission. White spent 21 minutes outside the spacecraft on 3rd June 1965, becoming the first American to walk in space. He was attached to the spacecraft by a tether and umbilical line (gold strand, bottom right corner) and carried an emergency oxygen supply (centre). A shaded visor protects him from the unfiltered rays of the sun. The Gemini IV mission was launched on 3rd June 1965 and lasted for 4 days, performing 62 revolutions of the Earth. CPLEAR EXPERIMENT AT CERN

CPLEAR experiment. The photograph shows various experiments fed via beam pipes with antiprotons made at the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN, the European centre for particle physics outside Geneva. CPLEAR is the yellow-faced cube at the end of the beam pipe curving to the right. It studied the matter-antimatter asymmetry known as charge-parity or CP violation in the decays of 'strange' particles called neutral kaons. In 1998, CPLEAR discovered a small but clear difference between particle interactions moving forwards and backwards in time. EXPERIMENT E181 THAT DISCOVERED CP VIOLATION

Experiment that discovered CP violation, 1964. The photo shows the set-up of experiment E181 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), Long Island, New York. In 1964, E181 discovered a subtle imbalance between matter and antimatter, known as charge-parity or CP violation. E181 studied the decays of 'strange' particles called neutral kaons & found that very occasionally they decay in a way that violates CP symmetry - the rule that any interaction of particles should work in the same way as (be symmetric to) the same interaction with equivalent antiparticles.
