Luis Alvarez (left) and Arthur Schawlow (right), US physicists. Alvarez (1911-1988) won the 1968 Nobel prize for his detection of short-lived resonance subatomic particles formed in particle accelerators. Schawlow (1921-1999) shared the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physics with Nicolaas Bloembergen and Kai Siegbahn for contributing to the development of laser spectroscopy. His work used lasers to study the interactions of electromagnetic radiation with matter.
