The Death of Sophonisba, 1760. Sophonisba, who lived from 235 to 203BC, was Queen of Numidia and daughter of the Carthaginian general Hasdrubal. She married one of the Numidian chiefs, Syphax, an ally of Rome, but succeeded in dissuading him against his commitments to the Republic. Syphax was defeated at the battle of Utica by Masinissa, another Numidian chief, whom Sophonisba married, having been betrothed to him before her marriage to Syphax. Worried that this new union would also result in the defection of an ally from the Roman side, Scipio Africanus ordered Masinissa to hand over Sophonisba in order to take her as a prisoner to Rome. Unable to enter into conflict with the Roman general but determined to avoid dishonour, Masinissa sent his wife a cup of poison which she drank. The Death of Sophonisba, 1760. The Presentation of the Captain General's Baton to Antonio Moncada by the Queen Regent Blanca of Sicily in 1410, 1664. As in the previous scene, the events take place in an interior, but here the solemn event is witnessed by a large group of prelates and other dignitaries gathered before the queen’s throne. In this case Van Kessel decorated his border with putti and numerous objects and instruments relating to war, including coats-of-arms, lances, swords, arrows and standards, as well as various military musical instruments such as drums and trumpets. Van Kessel framed the scenes at the sides with pilasters and two busts symbolising Justice and Liberalitas Regis. The Submission of the Sicilian Rebels to Antonio Moncada in 1411, 1663. Antonio de Moncada, having defeated the rebels, represented by two kneeling men in the foreground, receives the keys of the city held by a young boy on a tray. Wearing ceremonial armour and holding the baton of captain-general in his hand, Antonio de Moncada accepts the gift, standing under an ornate blue canopy. Teniers completes the scene with other figures wearing decorative armour. The border by Van Kessel has six small putti playing or holding objects such as a glass of wine, flowers, crowns or swinging from large ribbons. The musical instruments, pieces of armour, flowers and two concerts of exotic birds at the top provide a brilliant framework for the historical episode. Corner of a Library, 1711. An interior set against a plain wall with a bookcase to one side on which are neatly arranged volumes in perfect order. The bookcase is designed to allow easy access to the top shelves on which the largest volumes are kept, while a striking element is the curtain intended to protect them from dust and light. Leaning against the side of the bookcase are what appear to be rolled-up maps, together with an oriental lance, one of the various oriental items in the room. The foreground is used for a table covered with a splendid Chinese textile on which the artist has depicted a terrestrial and a celestial globe, an armillary sphere and an atlas. Sheba, c.1929. This is a portrait of Allison Kirkcaldie, who was part of the family that owned Wellington’s Kirkcaldie and Stains department store. She is painted in fancy dress, as the Queen of Sheba. In 1928, Allison Kirkcaldie was one of six young Wellington women chosen to participate in the Dream of Fair Women Pageant. The pageant was held in the Town Hall, with each participant dressed as a different queen. It was part of a fundraising carnival to raise money for the establishment of a National Art Gallery. This painting shows Vulcan offering the goddess a sword; at his feet are two putti playing with a plumed helmet, and behind him are a shield and armor. This work was a preliminary sketch for a tapestry design—one of a set commissioned from four different artists by the marquis de Marigny, an influential arts administrator under King Louis XV. Portrait Of Achille Deban De Laborde, 1817. Painted during the Bourbon restoration, this portrait depicts the son of a fallen Napoleonic hero during a time of anti-imperialism in France. Eight-year-old Achille wears a miniature version of the embroidered Hussar uniform his father, Baron Jean-Baptiste Deban de Laborde, would have worn. His father’s military awards, notably the ceremonial sword and Légion d’honneur hanging in the upper left, surround the young boy.
