Tablet to the memory of Lord Palmerston's father and mother, in Romsey Abbey Church, 1865. 'The tombs of Lord Palmerston's father and mother, as well as that of Sir William Temple, his brother, and those of other members of his family are in this church. We have engraved a drawing of the mural tablet, by Flaxman, which was erected by the late Minister to the memory of his parents, about the time when he entered public life. The inscription, which was probably composed by himself, runs as follows: "Sacred to the Memory of Henry Viscount Palmerston, Baron Temple, and of Mary Viscountess Palmerston, his second wife, whose remains are deposited near this place. He was born the 4th Dec., 1739; Succeeded his grandfather, Viscount Palmerston the 10th June, 1767, and departed this life the 20th Jan., 1805. Messrs. Hunt and Roskell's Shakspeare medal, 1864. Commemoration of the Tercentenary of Shakespeare's birth. 'Medal, designed by Mr. John Bell and executed by Mr. L. C. Wyon. Its obverse side presents a head of Shakspeare, the likeness, in profile, being copied from the Stratford bust, combined with the Chandos portrait. Under this is a facsimile of his autograph signature, inclosed in a wreath of wild flowers, among which are the primrose, cowslip, wild rose, honeysuckle, water-lily, hemlock, foxglove, bramble-berries, meadowsweet, and bindweed twining about a hazel wand. The titles of all Shakspeare's plays and poems are inscribed on the face of the medal around the head of the poet. On the reverse side is the figure of Shakspeare glorified, sitting upon a cloud, with three female figures, which personate the three centuries; two of them have already laid their wreaths upon the scroll that lies open on his knee; but the third, which is the present century, puts a wreath upon his head'. Monument In St. Chad's Church, Shrewsbury, to the officers and men of the 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment who fell during the Indian Mutiny, 1864. 'A monument has just been erected in the vestibule of St. Chad's Church,...at the expense of Lieutenant-General Sutherland, C.B., and other officers of the 53rd Regiment, in memory of the officers, non-commissioned officers, and privates of the regiment who fell in action or died from the effects of their wounds and exposure in the performance of their duty during the Indian mutiny in 1857, 1858, and 1859. The funeral urn stands on a simple pedestal, with military sashes thrown over it, with the regimental badge above, and the Queen's colours and those of the 53rd on each side. On the right stands an officer leaning, in a mournful attitude, upon one arm, which rests on the tablet recording the names of the dead. On the left hand is a Colour-Sergeant leaning on his rifle reversed. Various weapons of war are scattered at their feet. The sculptor is Mr. Manning, of York-terrace, Regent's Park. MEMORIAL-STONE TO THE LATE MR. BRAIDWOOD, 1862. CREATOR: UNKNOWN.

Memorial-stone to the late Mr. Braidwood, 1862. 'The tribute to the memory of the late Mr. Braidwood, Superintendent of the London Fire Brigade, raised by the M division of police, is an effectively-carved monument of Portland stone, designed and executed by Mr. S. H. Gardiner, of the New Kent-road. A wreath of laurel stands out in bold relief, round which entwines a fire-hose, encircling the inscription. At the foot of the wreath, forming the base of the memorial, are carved a fireman's accoutrements, consisting of a helmet, a hose-point, hatchet, crowbar, Ac. On the plinth some lines are inscribed. In the background, on the left, is a house on fire, the spreading flames and volumes of rolling smoke from the roof completing the upper part of the memorial. In the right background is an engine. The height of the stone is 4ft, 4in,, and the breadth 3ft. 2in. It will be placed against a wall, supported by iron brackets, in such a position as to mark the spot where Mr. Braidwood was buried in the ruins'. The Tooley Street fire started in Cotton's Wharf on 22 June 1861. The fire lasted for two weeks, and caused £2 million worth of damage. 'The figure of Fame is gracefully represented mourning over the fallen, and suspending above their names wreaths of laurel. The central compartments contain the names of the officers and the number of the sergeants, corporals, drummers, and privates...viz., Captains John Shiffner and John Robinson; Lieutenants Francis Richard Hurst, Hector Maclean Lawrence, Henry Daniel Alt, William Walker Jordan, Robert Browne Clayton, Norman Ramsay; thirteen sergeants, eleven corporals, four drummers, and two hundred and eighty-nine privates. [An inscription reads]: "This tablet commemorates the heroic and devoted services of the officers whose names are above inscribed, and of the non-commissioned officers, drummers, and privates of her Majesty's 34th, or Cumberland, Regiment, who were killed in action or died from the effects of arduous duty in the trenches before Sebastopol during the Crimean campaign, 1854-55. Mourning miniatures were very popular in the Romantic period and this design is typical for the late 18th and early 19th century. A classically dressed woman lays a wreath on an urn atop a tomb. The inscription on the tomb reads, "In memory of Geo. Chambers." In the background is a willow tree, associated with both mourning and new life. Almost monochrome, there are touches of pink on the woman's face and hands. On the back of the miniature is a panel of woven hair, and the monogram in pressed gold "EC," suggesting that this miniature may have been reworked to commemorate another family member as well as George.
