St. Eustace, c.1501. Showing St Eustace kneeling before a stag with a crucifix between its antlers. St Eustace was a Roman general Placidus who encountered a large stag while out hunting. He pursued the beast but found, when it stopped, that it had an image of the crucified Christ between its antlers and spoke in Christ's voice. The encounter led to Placidus/Eustace’s conversion to Christianity. Eustace was one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, a group of saints who were the subject of particular veneration in Germany and who were believed to assist in cases of illness and at the time of death. The Wiltshire Champion Coursing Meeting at Stonehenge, 1865. Engraving of a sketch by Mr. G. B. Goddard, representing '...the trysting-place for the coursers on one or two mornings during "the Champion week." Stonehenge, that pile of ambres or holy stones, is a great mystery. Some aver that they were brought by Merlin's aid from Scythia's shore by the great Pendragon, and others that they were raised by Danish chiefs in honour of the Idol of Victory. Be this as it may, the shepherds and the [hare] coursers share them now...The recent meeting was very well attended, and nine stakes were run off. The champion cup was won by Captain Viner's Shadow...At one time...the Wiltshire greyhound was a peculiarly small one, and often only weighed from 30 lb. to 35 lb...Gradually the Wiltshire men have been obliged to breed their greyhounds as large as their fellows; and the hares, which were once only five-pounders, have increased considerably as well, owing to their improved fare, since so much of the downs was broken up for turnips and corn'. Goodwood Races: the Stewards' Cup - Robin Hood Winding The Morte, 1865. One of the silver cups, '...or pieces of plate, which formed the principal prizes won at Goodwood races last week. The Chesterfield Cup [or the Stewards' Cup?], which has been manufactured by Messrs. R. and S. Garrard, of the Haymarket, was designed by Mr. Harrison Weir and modelled by Mr. W. Spencer. It displays a very spirited and lifelike figure of the English archer, Robin Hood, standing upon the body of a deer which he has just killed, and sounding a blast of triumph with his rustic horn; whilst a noble hound gives tongue as loudly in his own fashion, for the information of their belated comrades in the chase, who have not come up in time to be "in at the death".' Mode of capturing wild elephants in Ceylon: the alarm, 1864. Engraving of a photograph '...of the great elephant-catching expedition to a place called Ebbewellepittia...so as to afford the utmost sport and entertainment to the European visitors...the Cingalese huntsmen were keeping up a ring of watch-fires, at intervals of ten yards, all round the herd of wild elephants in the neighbouring forest. Sometimes an alarm would be raised when the noble beasts turned and seemed about to break through the circle at any particular point; the men would drive them back with shouts and noise of firing guns, but without killing or wounding any of them. A group of huntsmen, in the attitude they would assume at these exciting moments, is portrayed in our Illustration...The jungle was so thickly overgrown with underwood, as well as forest trees, that it was impossible to see more than twenty yards ahead'. 'A gratifying testimonial of public and private respect has recently been made to the Countess of Yarborough at Brocklesby Hall, Lincolnshire. Both the Earl and the Countess enjoy the pleasures of the chase, and, it being their delight that others should participate in the amusement, the Brocklesby hunt is kept up with the prestige which has always rendered it famous among the packs of England...The portrait is of life size, the picture measuring 10 ft. by 6 ft. The Countess is represented on her favourite hunter Brilliant, with two favourite hounds, named Gambler and Charity, at its feet. It is a striking and pleasing likeness, and was executed by F. Grant, Esq., at a cost of five hundred guineas...Mr. Joseph Kirkham, the secretary to the committee, who has been indefatigable in carrying out the presentation, read, on behalf of the subscribers, an address to her Ladyship..."I shall always value it," said her Ladyship, "as a work of art; but it is still dearer to me as a mark of the love and good-feeling existing between us".' In a Brazilian forest: waiting for a shot, 1864. 'The place where the sketch was made us a favourite haunt of the deer which resort to the banks of one of the small mountain streams near Petropolis. When a party of sportsmen arrive at this spot, their dogs are put into the woods to rouse the deer, which, when disturbed, generally follow the course of the nearest stream. The rifleman hides himself behind a rock, and patiently awaits the approach of the deer. It must be confessed, however, that his patience is too often not rewarded with a single shot. In general shooting in the Brazilian woods is not a very exciting sport...Moreover, in all his sylvan excursions in Brazil the sportsman is obliged to keep a very sharp look out for snakes. So that, except for the adventurous novelty of the situation one might prefer to take one's pleasure on a Scottish moor'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864. Visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales to Sweden: elk-shooting in the Forest of Hoegtorp - from a sketch by our special artist, 1864. The future King Edward VII in Scandinavia. 'The place was semicircular in form, and strangely suggestive of an amphitheatre. Lumps of stone dotted the indosure, between and around which was a tangled growth of fern forest grass; groves of birch and larch were the nearest trees, beyond these was a rising background of rocks crowned with the dark and pointed fir-trees. In the centre lay the prize, large as an ox, and with outstretched limbs already stiff, that Kings and Princes had come there to slay - a noble beast, with a pedigree more famous than any of theirs, extending back to prehistoric times, and written even in the stone tables of the antediluvian era. To look upon an elk newly killed is a privilege that in these days is given to very few...Much time was spent in discussing the size and weight of the prize, which was eventually taken on board the steamer and carried to Stockholm, the Prince expressing his intention of having the head cut off and preserved as a memorial of the day's sport'. The cup '...is surrounded by a relief copy of Landseer's "Deerstalkers' Return," below which the rose, thistle, and shamrock are braided with the ornament. The base is set with medallions bearing emblems of the chase; and the whole is surmounted by a figure of the Prince of Wales in his Highland costume. The carving is delicate and fine and the figures are well rendered; yet, in point of design, there are certain defects arising from the high relief of the subject'.
