INSPECTION OF FOREIGN CATTLE AT THE METROPOLITAN CATTLE MARKET, 1865. CREATOR: UNKNOWN.
Inspection of foreign cattle at the Metropolitan Cattle Market, [Copenhagen-fields, London], 1865. 'The importance of exercising a strict supervision over the sanitary state of these cattle...has lately occupied much of the public attention...Mr. Gibbins [chairman of the Markets Committee, Corporation of London] and Mr. Rudkin...[inspected] the cattle market at Islington, and visited the several slaughter-houses. Here a number of cows were found in a very bad state of disease, and they were immediately seized and condemned by the officer. The market itself was also inspected, and the attention of the inspector was called to about forty cows which had been sent to the market from a dairy at the west end of London, among which were several in a diseased condition. The inspector, acting under the powers vested in him, ordered the whole number to be immediately destroyed, so as to prevent the spread of the disease. The Markets Committee have made a report on the desirability of establishing hospitals or sanatoriums...to which diseased cattle may be removed...[and] may there receive proper medical treatment with a view to their ultimate recovery. There is a strong feeling among the cattle salesmen...in favour of the establishment of such places'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865. FREE OPENING OF THE ROYAL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY'S GARDENS ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE LATE..., 1864. CREATOR: UNKNOWN.
Free opening of the Royal Horticultural Society's Gardens on the anniversary of the late Prince Consort's birthday, 1864. '...the Horticultural Gardens at South Kensington, of which his Royal Highness was the founder, were opened to the public for the first time free of charge...it was estimated that not less than 120,000 people visited them in the course of the day...the vast crowd, composed of all classes, but especially of the middle and lower, with a large proportion of children, appeared thoroughly to enjoy themselves...scarcely any restriction was placed upon the visitors, who were free to go where they pleased...The pupils of several schools, that of the Duke of York among the rest, went in procession with their banners and bands, for which they had the express permission of the council. Other bands were stationed at various parts of the gardens, and played at intervals during the day. A body of metropolitan police were in attendance, but were so distributed over the grounds as to appear as little obtrusive as possible...the Old Hundredth Psalm, with a hymn composed by the Prince Consort, and the National Anthem, were sung with fine effect by the visitors on the upper terrace, the singing being led by trumpeters'. EARL RUSSELL AT THE OPENING OF THE NORTH LONDON WORKING-MEN'S EXHIBITION, 1864. CREATOR: UNKNOWN.
Earl Russell at the opening of the North London Working-men's Exhibition, [Agricultural Hall, Islington], 1864. Foreign Secretary Russell said that the working classes of London were "superior to any other working people in the world," '...and expressed "the highest admiration of their industry, skill, and ingenuity, so many beautiful proofs of which are to be seen in this collection.''...the objects here exhibited are divided into two parts - the products of workmen who have sent specimens of their skill and ingenuity in the trade by which they live, and products of amateurs...[The committee said]: "An artisan seldom chooses as a recreation that branch of industry of which his daily occupation consists. If actively or laboriously employed during the day, drawing, painting, or model-making is generally practised to occupy his leisure hours; while he who follows a sedentary occupation almost invariably resorts to some more active method of utilising his spare time. The remarkable proficiency attained by many exhibitors in amateur workmanship cannot fail to afford encouragement to others who may visit the exhibition, and thus fulfil one of the chief aims of the promoters of the undertaking".'
