INSEKT MUECKE METAMORPHOSE
Metamorphosis of an adult Northern house mosquito Culex pipiens, from its larval form on the surface of water. The insect rests for a moment on the water surface before taking off, supported by surface tension effects - the interactions of molecules in water and air at their interface. Surface tension effectively creates a skin over the volume of water, on which the mosquito's legs rest in depressions. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/CLAUDE NURIDSANY AND MARIE PERENNOU)
