COSTA RICA REGENWALD
[Stockbild] Slash and burn deforestation. View of burning, clear-cut tropical rainforest from the edge of an uncut area. This procedure is known as "slash and burn" deforestation. The systematic clearing of trees and vegetation from the rainforests has raised concern that countless plant and animal species could be made extinct. There are also fears that the lack of oxygen-producing vegetation in these areas could contribute to global warming, due to increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Forests are cut down not just for timber, but also to clear land for crops and grazing farm animals. Photographed in Heredia province, Costa Rica.
