FROST FORMATION
A white formation commonly found on the base of the stem in iron weed and white crownbeard. The white, flower-like growth results as moisture travels up from the roots of the plant into the fractured stem, where the water freezes and pushes these frost formations out during the night. These "flowers" melt with the morning sun. Photographed near Geuda Springs, Kansas. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE SOURCE/Kenneth M. Highfill)
