Long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas). This animal is not a whale but a dolphin. It is found in all temperate and sub-polar waters except the North Pacific. It mostly eats squid, but will also take fish and octopus. Males can reach over 6 metres in length and weigh 1.75 tonnes. The pilot whale is a social animal, living in groups, or pods, that can number 100s of individuals and often associates with other dolphins and whales. It is usually found in deep water, but does venture into shallow water for food. Social bonds are often so strong that when 1 individual becomes stranded, others will follow, leading to mass strandings. Photographed in the Mediterranean Sea.
