DEUTSCHLAND MAHNMAL HOLOCAUST EROEFFNUNG
Visitors walk between the concrete pillars at the new Holocaust memorial in Berlin on Tuesday May 10, 2005. Berlin unveiled its haunting new memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe on Tuesday, culminating 17 years of charged debate and controversy over how Germany should remember the darkest chapter in its history. The memorial is designed by U.S. architect Peter Eisenman and consists of 2,711 charcoal-grey rectangular pillars, which rise from the ground and form a tight grid through which visitors can wander.
