SOUTH AFRICA BIG WAVE SURFING
South African big wave surfer Mickey Duffus surfs a wave off Sunset reef in Cape Town, South Africa Tuesday 29 August 2006. Big wave surfing has become extremely popular in South Africa which experiences massive swells this time of year during the southern hemisphere winter. Surfers use custom made surfboards that are heavier than normal and have footstraps for the rider to attach himself to the board which is then towed into the waves using waverunners allowing the surfers to reach the high speeds neccessary to catch the large waves.
