Human brain, illustration. The front of the brain is at right in this view from the side. The brain is the nerve centre that controls bodily functions and thought. The major part of the brain is the forebrain, which consists mostly of the cerebrum, the largest and most developed part of the brain. The cerebrum is responsible for intelligent thought, language, conscious movement and memory. The more primitive parts of the brain operate automatic or subconscious responses. They are the brainstem (protrusion at base of brain), which controls physiological functions such as breathing, and the cerebellum (small area at left of brainstem), which controls balance and posture.(KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY SPL/ELLA MARU STUDIO / SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
