JAPAN WIRTSCHAFT BOERSE
Yen dollar rate (above) and Nikkei closing index, as seen on display in downtown Tokyo brokerage firm, Friday, 26 March 2004. Tokyo stocks closed sharply higher today on optimism over Japan's economic outlook, with the Nikkei index advancing 239.74 points, up 2.08% and finishing at 11,770.65. This is the largest single-day point gain so far this year to hit a fresh 21-month closing high. The dollar fell against the yen, closing below 106 yen in Tokyo as dollar bears nullified suspected Bank of Japan (BOJ) interventions in light of a surge in Japanese equities prices and chronic U.S. trade deficits.
