TRICERATOPS DINOSAUR SKULL
Triceratops dinosaur skull. Three-dimensional scan of the skull of a Triceratops dinosaur. This was produced for the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Washington DC, USA. Its 100-year- old display of a Triceratops fossil skeleton, the first in the world, had to be disassembled for preservation. The bone shapes were scanned as the skeleton was dismantled. The skull's complexity, fragility and weight required various scanning techniques. Most of the original fossils were used to mould the replica skeleton, completed in May 2001. However, the complex skull and three other bones were reconstructed from the scanning data. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE)
