USA EISERNE LUNGE
Iron lung. Nurse with a male polio patient inside an Emerson respirator, or iron lung. The iron lung mechanically moves air in and out of the lungs when the patient is incapable of breathing for themselves. Devices such as these were used by polio patients whose ability to breath was paralysed due to the crippling viral disease. Photographed in Rhode Island, USA, in 1960.
