PERSONAL HYGIENE, UGANDA
Personal hygiene. Child using a cup of water to wash his face. This child is a 'night commuter' from the Gulu region of northern Uganda. Northern Uganda is the site of an armed rebellion by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). The intensity of the conflict has increased since 2002, and the LRA often abducts children to use as soldiers and slave labourers. Each night, children between the ages of 3 and 17 walk many kilometres from the surrounding countryside to the safety of larger towns. These children are known as 'night commuters'. This child is being cared for at a site run by the Catholic Sacred Heart Sisters organisation. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/MAURO FERMARIELLO)
