T/I 2085-02 Christiaan Barnard. Obligatory Credit - CAMERA PRESS/Peter Sellers. South African heart transplant surgeon Christiaan Barnard is pictured during an operation. On the 3rd December 1967 Barnard led the South African team of surgeons in the first ever heart transplant operation, at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Capetown. The patient died 17 days after rejecting the new heart. Barnard continued to practice and refine this type of surgery and the survival time of his patients increased. Christiaan Barnard died of a heart attack on 02/09/2001 whilst on holiday with his wife. (KEYSTONE/CAMERA PRESS/Peter Sellers)
