FLUORESCENT MILLIPEDE

California is home to the world's only known group of bioluminescent millipedes, genus Motyxia. The light produced by these millipedes apparently ranges from white to greenish white. This is a demonstration of fluorescence under black light. Fluorescence is defined as visible light emitted by a substance that has absorbed light of a different wavelength. Motyxia sequoia alia is one of the bioluminescent species from the southern Sierra Nevada range. Compare to images taken under natural light and by its own light. Its highly coiled shape makes it appear as multiple circles when sliced transversely. The corpus luteum develops in the region of the ovary where the mature egg was released into a fallopian tube. It occupies a large area in the centre of the image, with its walls appearing highly folded around a central space; the rest of the ovary is at lower left. Glandular luteal cells of the corpus luteum are derived from cells of the follicle which surrounded the egg. These luteal cells develop under the influence of luteinizing hormone, and they in turn secrete progesterone. This progesterone hormone is important during early pregnancy.
