***BILD GESPERRT***
Former SS Major Walter Reder during his war crimes trial, Bologna, Italy, c1951. Reder (1915-1991) was sentenced to life imprisonment for ordering the massacre of the inhabitants of the Italian village of Marzabotto, near Bologna, in 1944 in reprisal for support given by the villagers to partisans. 700 people, many of them women and children, were executed by his troops. In 1984 Reder wrote to the people of Marzabotto expressing his profound repentance for the massacre, and was released from prison the following year after serving 33 years. After his release he moved to Austria and quickly retracted his apology. (KEYSTONE/HERITAGE IMAGES/Keystone Archives)
