ALKENE BROMINE TEST
Alkene test. Image 2 of 2. Demonstration of the result of testing for an alkene (hex-1-ene, C6H12, right) with bromine water (brown). The positive result (right, clear) is the decolorization of the bromine water by the alkene. No reaction occurs at left, as the alkane (hexane, C6H14, left) fails to decolorize the bromine water. The hexene has a double bond (it is unsaturated) and is more reactive than the hexane (which has formed all the bonds it can and is saturated).
