NATUR SCHNEEFLOCKE
Rimed snowflake. Snowflakes are ice crystals that form in air that has a temperature near the freezing point of water. If the air is calm, then a symmetrical, hexagonal snowflake can form. As it grows larger, branching instabilities lead to the formation of arms. In this snowflake, the arms are also hexagons. The snowflake is also covered in rime, small droplets of frozen water that are from the cloud in which the snowflake formed. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/Kenneth Libbrecht) === ===
