FALLOUT SHELTER EXHIBIT, USA, 1960S
Fallout shelter exhibit at a local civil defence fair, USA, in around 1960. This exhibit, of a fallout shelter designed for families, was prepared by the Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization. At this point, in the early 1960s, the Cold War between the USA and the USSR was reaching its peak. Fallout shelters included a two-week supply of food and water, a battery-operated radio, auxiliary light sources, and first aid, sanitary and other equipment. Following a nuclear strike by the Soviet Union, a family would be able to live in the shelter until radiation had fallen to safe levels.
