AERIAL VIEW OF A KETTLE LAKE WITH FORESTED ISLANDS
Forested kettle lake. Aerial view of a kettle lake with forested islands. Kettle lakes are glacial features which result from a large body of ice from a glacier being buried by glacial sediment as the glacier retreats. As the block slowly decays, the sediment collapses to form a depression, which becomes filled with water. Areas of shallow sediment are seen here in green surrounding the forested islands. Photographed in Osterseen, southern Germany. This lake was formed by a glacier which descended from the Alps during the last Ice Age. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/BERNHARD EDMAIER)
