Sacred city of Anuradhapura, the oldest of the Singhalese royal cities. Founded in the 4th c. BC A. remained for 1400 years the capital of Sri Lanka and since about 250 BC it is a major Buddhist center with its holy Bodhi tree and other holy relics of the Buddha attracting pilgrims from faraway. Giant monasteries with up top 5000 monks each and Dagobas (stupas) up to 122 m in height were landmarks. Anuradhapura grew to be a metropolis the size of today's Greater Paris. The building of large tanks (reservoirs) and a very sophisticated water management permitted such growth in a rather dry and inhospitable environment. A Worl Heritage site. In the background is the Ruwanweli Dagoba, 90 m high and 100 m in diamater, Sri Lanka's biggest still standing stupa.Built in the reign of King Duttagemuna (162-137). Before restoration it had been bubble-shaped. Sri Lanka. (KEYSTONE/Georg Gerster)
