War crimes trial, Frankfurt, West Germany, October 1970. Defendants Bruno Beger (1911-2009) and Professor Hans Fleischhacker (1912-1992), German anthropologists. Along with Wolf-Dietrich Wolff, Beger and Fleischhacker came under investigation of involvement in the procurement of victims for the accumulation of a collection of Jewish skeletons for anthropological study at Auschwitz. A case was not brought against the men until 1970. Ultimately the case against Fleischhacker was dismissed the following year as there was insufficient evidence to prove that he knew he was involved in the extermination of Jews. Beger was eventually convicted in 1974, but only received the minimum sentence of 3 years and served no time in prison. (KEYSTONE/HERITAGE IMAGES/KEYSTONE ARCHIVES)
