PROKTITIS
[Stockbild] Proctitis. Coloured barium enema X-ray of the abdomen of a male patient, showing proctitis of the rectum. The rectum is seen at bottom centre (dark grey), the end of the large intestine (colon, green) seen winding around the abdomen from centre left to upper centre to lower right. Proctitis is an inflamed rectum, here diagnosed by granularity of the rectal mucosa (wall) and widened presacral space. Symptoms are soreness, bleeding, and sometimes a discharge. It may be associated with ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease or injury. A barium enema is introduced into the rectum to make it and the colon visible on X-ray.
