Maiduguri, Nigeria - 26.03.2016:.Scene in a 'Al Maiiri' school, one of thousands of such 'schools' in the predominantly muslim north of Nigeria. ...|| Young boys between roughly between 4 and 14 years old, attend these quranic schools, where they are being taught about the quran and in some cases also learn arabic or even to read and write. There is no organized system behind this nigerian tradition: parents send the boys they can't feed at home to these schools, where the teacher, often an imam, is taking care of them. The classes are free of charge, but the kids have to roam the streets and beg for food. Since there is no system and thus no control over these schools, they are prone to being abused as a tool to manipulate the young boys attending them. Not every Almajiri becomes a member of Boko Haram, but many members of Boko Haram have been former Almajiris. (KEYSTONE/LAIF/Andy Spyra)
