FRANKREICH METRO PARIS
File photo taken in 1900 shows the newly-inaugurated Paris mtro. Digging for the underground rail transport system was begun in 1898, and Line1 from Porte de Vincennes to Porte Maillot was opened 19 July 1900, in time for the Universal Exposition. The system owes its existence to the indefatigable Fulgence Bienvenue, Breton engineer who tunneled safely under the Seine by first freezing the ground. (KEYSTONE/AFP/Str) === ===
