Friedrich Schwend, German SS officer, forger and spy, c1960s-c1970s. Schwend (1906-1980) was involved in Operation Bernhard, the forging of large quantities of British currency during the Second World War in an attempt to destabilise the British economy. The banknotes were printed by inmates at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. After the end of the war he left Germany for South America, where he was involved in business dealings with Nazi fugitives Klaus Barbie and Josef Mengele. In 1976 he was extradited from Peru to Germany to face trial for the wartime murder of Teofilo Kamber, one of his agents in Italy. Found guilty, he received a two year suspended sentence and was deported back to Peru. (KEYSTONE/HERITAGE IMAGES/Keystone Archives)
