VENUS FLYTRAP LEAF, LIGHT MICROGRAPH
Venus flytrap leaf. Light micrograph of a section through the leaf of a Venus flytrap (Dionaea sp.), showing the digestive glands that line it's interior. This carnivorous plant catches its prey inside its leaves. The inner surface of each leaf is covered in cushion glands (red) that secrete digestive enzymes to break down the prey's body. The plant then absorbs the nitrogenous nutrients that are released. Magnification: x13, when printed 10 centimetres wide. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/DR KEITH WHEELER/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
