LYMPHOMA OF THE STOMACH
Lymphoma of the stomach, gross specimen. Although a rare type of cancer, the stomach is still the most common site for all lymphomas of the gut. Lymphoma is a cancerous growth and in the stomach it consists usually of B cell lymphocytes. Infection by the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and gastritis are significant risk factors. Hence it contributes to a higher proportion (10%) of all stomach cancers in the developing world, since Helicobacter pylori is more prominent there. The prognosis for gastric lymphoma carries about a 40-75% five year survival rate depending on depth of invasion, the size of the tumour, historical grade and extension into adjacent organs.
