FORSCHUNG PHYSIK
Three-jet event in the L3 detector at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. An electron and positron, accelerated to high-energy in CERN's LEP collider, annihilate at the centre of the cylindrical detector (shown in red). Their energy rematerialises as a neutral Z particle. The Z immediately decays into a quark and an antiquark, one of which radiates a gluon, the carrier particle of the strong nuclear force. The quark, antiquark, and gluon instantly give rise to the three jets of particles that spray out through the detector. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/CERN) === ===
