PROSTHETIC SHAFTS FOR HIP REPLACEMENT
Prosthetic shaft for hip replacement. These prostheses are inserted into the femur (thigh bone). They will have a ball attached at the top, which will form part of the hip joint. The majority of hip replacements are a result of osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that results in the loss of cartilage between the joint and the growth of bone in place of the cartilage. This causes pain, stiffness and loss of mobility. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/D & L GRAPHICS / SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
