EDIBLE FLOWERS AND VEGETABLES
Edible flowers and vegetables. Nasturtium flowers (Tropaeolum officinalis) are added to salads, the seeds (not seen) can be pickled and are used as a substitute for capers. Dried chilli peppers (bottom right) are the fruit of the Capsicum frutescens plant, which are used as a hot spice. The gourds & squashes (lower right) all belong to the Cucurbitaceae family, they are a winter vegetable and occasionally used for decorative purposes. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/ERIKA CRADDOCK)
